Course Description
This course covers a range of family counseling theories and techniques to prepare students for three family counseling contexts: secular counseling contexts, Christian counseling and counseling families affected by addiction. As such, this course covers the integration of family therapy, addiction counseling and Christian worldviews. You will learn to apply a range of theories and models to case studies in family counseling including: Narrative, Systems, Psychodynamic, Transgenerational, Experiential, Structural, Strategic, Cognitive-Behavioral and Solution-Focused therapy models. The conclusion of the course directs the student to compare and contrast these approaches to family counseling while creating their own approach to family therapy.
Course Outcomes
After completing this course you should be able to:
- Reflect on your own family of origin using narrative, genogram and Bowen theory analysis to improve your effectiveness as a counselor.
- Apply a range of theories and models to case studies in family counseling including: Narrative, Systems, Psychodynamic, Transgenerational, Experiential, Structural, Strategic, Cognitive-Behavioral and Solution-Focused therapy models.
- Integrate Christian perspectives and techniques on various models of family counseling.
- Apply family theories and models to case studies of families affected by addiction.
- Compare and contrast various theories of family counseling for application.
- Evaluate different approaches to family counseling while creating a personal working theory of family counseling.
